Android is an operating system developed for mobile phones and tablets by the Open Handset Alliance led by Google. Android was listed as the best-selling smartphone platform worldwide in Q4 2010 by Canalys. The main manufacturers who sell mobile phones with the Android operating system are HTC, LG, Motorola, Samsung, Sony Ericsson. Apps for the Android operating system can be downloaded from the Android Market which is an online app store (usually pre-loaded onto Android phones) run by Google. Android is Open Source Software so anyone can customise it which means the consumer will benefit from having a wide range of mobile applications to choose from. However this is a double-edged sword as open source platforms could significantly increase the risk of hacking or the development of malicious apps.
